Don't know quite what's got me thinking of them, but...

Nursery rhymes. I've actually got a pair of favorites, both stemming from my father. The first is

To market, to market, to buy a fat pig,
Home again, home again, jigity jig.

because daddy would/still does always say the second line when we'd finished an outing (usually shopping). It just became one of thoes key phrases of my life.

The second is more obscure.

To bed, to bed, cried Sleepyhead.
Tarry a while, said Slow.
Put on the pot, said Greedy Sot,
We'll sup before we go.

Daddy started saying "To bed, to bed, cried Sleepyhead" some time in my late high school years when I started staying up later and later. Now that I'm at college and my sleeping schedule on breaks is all kinds of fucked up it's become something of a ritual. I'll be reading in the living room when he finishes whatever he's working on and says that because he's going to bed. I invariably respond with the second line, since I'm going to be staying up for a while.

We've even had mini!arguments about the last two lines, because when he learned it he learned "Put on the pan, said Greedy Nan" but the rhyme anthology I've got uses "Greedy Sot" and just generally like calling someone "sot". Maybe that's just me.

So, how's this for a four minute distraction? Tell me your favorite Nursery Rhyme and the reason, if you've got one.

On another note... Many many thanks and *hugs* to [livejournal.com profile] reabhecc for the lovely cd. Ended up downloading itunes just so I could listen to it in order. I'd say you've got a pretty solid handle on me right now.

Ended up at the diner tonight with [livejournal.com profile] wylddelirium, [livejournal.com profile] mithrigil, [livejournal.com profile] oudemia, [livejournal.com profile] lepidus, [livejournal.com profile] tymothytoastman, [livejournal.com profile] reabhecc and Drama Boi, which was nice. Hoorah for rice pudding and enough of one's work to be able to hang out with people, but beyond that most of today has been spent working and stuff. More work than stuff really, although I did some quiet reading for fun since it was all cold and rainy out.

Is actually cold inside too, but *shrug* that means it will be warm in the blankets.

Right. Time for this one to be sleeping, for the blankets, they call to me.
